Hi, my name is Simon Bontempo, I’m a Mechanical Design Engineer at Gatik, the leader in autonomous middle mile logistics. My job is to design and integrate our technology onto different vehicle platforms for our customers across North America. I work alongside our software engineers to create some of the most advanced autonomous vehicles in the industry. I'm based out of our office in Toronto, Canada but today you'll get to follow me to Dallas, Texas where I’m working on some of our vehicles there!
Once I arrive at the office I start my day by catching up with some emails, and sync with my team on what we need to achieve for the day.
Getting ready to work on our trucks, I start by laying out all the tools and components I need to complete the jobs.
After my morning meetings and completing some tasks on a couple of our trucks, I took a moment to explore a bit of our Texas facility and take in the scale of our operations!
One thing I love about working at Gatik is the variety of work I get to do. One day I'm drilling into our cab to mount brackets, the next I get to do some CAD and 3D printing prototypes, then I’m swapping out components in our computer stack to optimize operation.
After a quick lunch with the team, it’s back to work on one of our trucks known internally as VENOM! We’ve given unique superhero names to each one of the vehicles in our fleet including Deadpool, Cyborg, Ironman and Yoda…It's a fun way to keep track of which trucks we are working on.
Taking a break with some of the team to have some Texas BBQ! This is a great way to relax and get to know each other a little better. Company culture is very important at Gatik and we believe that it shows in our work. There are no individuals at Gatik, we are a team!
After dinner, I'm back on the trucks and finishing up my tasks for the day. Carrying out some final validation and verification checks and taking some pictures as well - these will be used to populate documentation for others to use when installing these components in other locations.
