We are looking for a highly-motivated Lead R&D Systems Engineer to work with the company’s Chief R&D Officer in assessing, modelling and testing new architectures and technologies for the company’s future lidar generations. The candidate will perform systemic qualitative and quantitative analyses and simulations, will communicate with technology vendors, and present analysis results to the company’s technical leadership team. 

The successful candidate will have a Ph. D. in EE, Physics or a related engineering discipline, and have at least 5 years of work experience. The responsibilities of the job are highly interdisciplinary. Deep expertise in at least one of the required disciplines is necessary, with a strong willingness to learn the other disciplines. A demonstrated ability to tackle open-ended problems, define an analytical methodology to address these problems and a proficiency in simulation tools is necessary. 

Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop a deep understanding of AEye’s current LiDAR architecture and technologies.
  • Develop a performance model of the current system and adapt it to assess the trade-offs of introducing new technologies.
  • Propose performance metrics to compare various implementations.
  • Run physical experiments of system components and of the complete system to assess atual versus modeled performance.
  • Present findings to engineering and management teams.

Essential Skills & Experience Requirements (required):

  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following: Lasers (fiber lasers, edge-emitting lasers, VCSELs); focal-plane arrays (CMOS or III-V), MEMS scanners, free-space optics.
  • Programming in MATLAB or python.

Preferred Skills & Experience (useful):

  • LiDAR or camera-development highly desirable.
  • Experience in the automotive space highly desirable.
  • Experience in signal processing and algorithm development.
  • Independent, self-starter, while working in a team setting.
  • Experience in a fast-paced and demanding start-up environment.
