AEye is seeking an experienced Advanced Component Engineer to join our NPI team. The selected candidate will have opportunities to work on new technology, transform concepts and strategies into structured projects, and help make key technical decisions to drive product development and customer success. 

As the NPI Advanced Component Engineer, you will help define, develop, test, and launch solutions for our next generation LiDAR product family. You will work alongside engineers from R&D, Product Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing technicians producing sensors. You will need the relevant experience and skills for evaluating, designing, and implementing functional- and design-verification tests for AEye’s hardware and software. You will also be involved with specifying manufacturing tools, processes, data collection and test requirements concurrently with the product development. 

Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Works with R&D, Product Engineering, Quality and Manufacturing teams to deliver high quality and high-performance hardware components for AEye’s LiDAR products. 
  • Supports design and development of key components in collaboration with multi-disciplined engineering teams. 
  • Identifies technical requirements and specifications and crafts RFx to identify the best component vendors. 
  • Designs and develops component validation plan/process, and coordinates testing, first article inspections, and qualification activities. 
  • Creates clear and concise data-driven reports and presents recommendations to stakeholder teams and management. 
  • Supports systems engineering testing scenarios that incorporate both hardware and software. 
  • Establish strong working relationship with external vendors and CMs to control the production process and quality. 
  • Write technical reports and documentations to support the transfer of designs into production. 
  • Work with manufacturing and QA team to create necessary process instructions. 
  • Maintain latest component specifications in QMS and ensure specifications are applicable to product function, performance, and quality requirement.
  • Proactively identify risks in the design and manufacturing process using the key components. 
  • Supports product engineering and quality team to analyze and solve the issues and/or failures.  
  • Conducts agile development process and assesses the priority and severity with cross functional teams to unblock the issues. Manages and analyzes the data collected by engineering process and visualizes results to dashboard. 
  • Works with manufacturing team to monitor and improve metrics/KPIs. 
  • Supports continuous improvement efforts for efficiency, cost, and quality. 

Essential Skills & Experience Requirements (required): 

  • Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, or a related field. 
  • Minimum 4 years professional experience in component engineering.  
  • Strong understanding of process, process / quality control, fabrication, packaging, and module assembly of hardware components such as mechanical, optical, IC, and MEMS devices. 
  • Ability to create RFx based on the technical requirement or specification and communicate with suppliers or CMs. 
  • Understanding and hands on experience of manufacturing process control and quality systems 
  • Experience with creating drawing, BOM, datasheet, specification, and engineering drawing. 
  • Understanding of quality standard, regulatory, reliability testing, and FMEA executions. 
  • Experience with high volume product development and product development life cycle.  
  • Experience with lab testing and design of hardware and software tools for test.  
  • Strong data management and analysis skills. 
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in cross-functional team environment with people at all levels. 

Preferred Skills & Experience (useful): 

  • Knowledge of mechanical, optical, and electrical design principles. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. 
  • Ability to influence others and lead small teams. 
  • Ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously. 
  • Effective problem identification and solution skills. 
  • Experience with analog circuit design and low and/or high voltage electrical circuit design.
  • Knowledge of and significant prior experience in optics and laser systems is highly desirable. 
  • Experience in the automotive industry is highly desirable.
  • Experience with LiDAR sensing solutions is a plus. 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and demanding start-up enterprise.  
  • Understanding of plastics/metal material properties, molding development, & tooling design. 
  • Experience in statistical analysis
