Joby Overview

Located in Northern California, the Joby Aviation team is steadily working toward our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine an air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly and quickly carries you over the traffic congestion below, giving you back the time that otherwise would have spent sitting in traffic. Since 2009, our team has been making this dream a reality, designing and flight testing a prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented individuals to join our team as we push onwards towards certifying the aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, high-rate production, and preparing for commercialization with launch targeted in select markets for 2024.

Overview

Modern aircraft development requires demonstrated compliance to a variety of FAA rules, guidance documents, and industry standards. The Digital Development Assurance Group is critical to ensuring Joby’s compliance to ARP4754A for systems development, DO-178C for software development, and DO-254 for electronics development. In addition, this group leads Joby’s cybersecurity efforts and is paving a path toward future certification of autonomous vehicles. The skilled engineers within this group are establishing company plans, standards, policies, and procedures for meeting the various development assurance guidelines and serve in both a mentoring and oversight capacity for Joby in addition to coordinating with the FAA. As a clean sheet aircraft developer and as required by the certification process, it is critical that clear, concise, and comprehensive requirements are developed for Joby’s products. While individual design engineering groups are the primary owners of the requirements for their areas, Joby has a need for a dedicated and experienced team to support the design areas with requirements engineering prowess. This includes development and maintenance of requirements schemas and traceability infrastructure, identifying sources of requirements, mentoring in the proper construction of requirements, and development of common requirements for use across Joby’s portfolio of projects.

Responsibilities

Note: It is understood that individual candidates are unlikely to have experience in all these areas nor is it expected. Our goal is to find individuals who are open to new challenges and are willing to roll up their sleeves and do what is necessary to help the team succeed. We would like to ultimately build a development assurance team where individuals have both breadth across many aspects of development assurance and depth in one or two areas. The goal is to certify our aircraft with a constant attention to safety and airworthiness compliance. The successful candidate may find themselves briefing the FAA one day, auditing a peer review process the next, and helping author compliance documentation the day after. Candidates with strong skills in one area and a desire to specialize in one area are encouraged to apply but should expect to be asked to stretch beyond that specialization so as to gain the valuable insights that come from being multi-faceted.
